I would have felt better about the news had Lionsgate simply said "2017" with no specific date attached to it. That way Lionsgate could make a future decision for the movie to be an early 2017 release, a summer 2017 release, or even a late 2017 release without causing fans to worry about the movie's production status, or jumping to conclusions based on one specific date. In the video game world, Nintendo is the master of using delays to make a better ultimate product, and their longtime fans know that, and that has been the way they have made their games for decades now. Let's hope the filmmakers follow that example.

If you want to be hopeful about the movie's prospects despite a January release date, remember this: it has often been the times when the franchise is under the most distress that things change for the better. We have had the show cancelled before only for it to return somehow, whether by moving to a new home in New Zealand, or by having someone else buy the rights.
